Rodney's Class Description
For the April Workshop at Waxworks I will be sharing my typical approach to working with encaustic. A discussion that my artist friends and I have had, especially when we were starting out, was "why are we using encaustic? What does it offer that couldn't be done with some other medium? What is distinct in this medium that calls to us and appeals to our senses? How do those aspects relate to what we want to say with our art?"
One of my main answers to these questions is that encaustic can create a literal depth visually, creating and enhancing an atmospheric perspective in its translucency that relates to the sense of spaciousness that I want for my art. This ability to "look into" encaustic, rather than simply "at the surface" is very appealing to me.
My class will explore ways of using multiple layers of clear medium to visually and spatially separate elements of drawing, painting and collage, encouraging the artist to think in the 3rd dimension in creating the work. I rarely paint with encaustic paint, rather I work mostly with encaustic medium layered with a variety of other elements.
I will be sharing some of the different drawing mediums that I have found to work well with encaustic, such as oil pastel, caran d'ache crayons, drawing inks, and oil stick. I will demonstrate transfer drawing techniques using graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, and printed images. I discuss collaging paper and other elements, and how to deal with some of the problems that arise when using collage. We will look at making different marks from discrete lines to transparent washes.
I would suggest you bring drawing materials that you enjoy using, such as mentioned above, as well as anything else that you have tried or would like to try in conjunction with encaustic. Also consider bringing collage materials such as interesting paper, fabric, dried organic objects, string, thread, twine, and printed imagery. Because some of the techniques we will be exploring work best with a cooling period between layers, I suggest having several small panels to work on simultaneously.

3D with Miles Conrad
Off the Wall: Encaustic in Three Dimensions
Texture! One of the intrinsic qualities of the encaustic medium is sparking
exciting developments among artists of encaustic. This hands-on workshop
will cover the technical fundamentals for creating innovative
three-dimensional works made of encaustic and/or incorporating mixed media
and found objects.
Instructor, Miles Conrad, has been working in the encaustic medium for 17
years and has exhibited his 3-D works nationally. Miles holds a BFA from
California Institute of the Arts and an MFA from San Francisco Art
Institute. He regularly offers classes in encaustic at all levels at his
Tucson, AZ studio.
